Budapest

Chris and I hopped a cheap flight to Budapest for the weekend. It took us an hour and half to get there. We were looking forward to the jump in temps, it had been in the low 70s there and was predicted to continue through the weekend. When we started talking to others about going everyone said the thing to do was go to the spas. Turns out it's quite well known for its thermal springs. The Romans had baths there when the land was part of its empire and the Turks did as well. After we got to the hotel Friday afternoon, we headed straight for a bath house.

I'm not sure if it's because we have been living in a nonEnglish speaking country for so long or what, but traveling on foreign public transport is way easy than it used to be. You learn to look for clues instead of being able to read signs. That and you are just much more willing to go for it. How wrong can it end up?

We made it to the bath house no problem. By now the sun was setting some and it was probably in the high 60's. I couldn't believe I was about to go swimming...outdoors!

The brochure had said the entrance was across from the circus. That was easy enough to find.

The building was amazing. It was called the Széchenyi spa, opened in June 1913, named after István Széchenyi. He was a 19th century Hungarian statesman and writer, who happened to establish the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

The water was amazing; it was 90-95 degrees. It was dusk now and everything was just so beautiful. We didn't take pictures because we weren't sure about carrying our phones around, but I'll have more pics in the next post. There were 3 outdoor pools, all with different temps, posted on the rails.

After a relaxing soak in the mineral water, where we were certain we could feel the healing. We had massages! Then we hopped the metro back into the city center (we were staying on the Pest side) and went for a walk. We found street vendors and grabbed some sidewalk dinner.

After getting a basic lay of the surroundings, we headed in for the night.
